encaustic

3/4" plywood panels

Fresh made encaustic medium

The setup

Here are a few pix of my encaustic setup. I decided to make an investment in these supplies since I intend to continue working in encaustic. I got a hot plate and a griddle to use instead of just an electric skillet so I can use the hotplate to make gesso, size, medium, etc., being that I am now Officially Banned from the kitchen. (rightly so--it is a safety hazard to mix food and art supplies, or even have them prepared in the same space.) Part of said banishment was the stipulation that I may no longer appropriate kitchen implements for art preparations. (Now, really, I wasn't taking the good stuff, come on.) As you can see, I completed the medium, using a recipe of 1 part damar resin to 8 parts beeswax. Using a meat thermometer helped regulate the temperature for minimal fumes, and in the last photo, the hotplate/griddle is situated in front of an open window with a fan drawing out any fumes.
